Every day, they provide service to about 54 million individuals. They are the second-largest fast-food chain in the world, behind Subway, in terms of the total number of locations. Their founders opened their first restaurant in San Bernardino, California in 1940. McDonald's food is sold in the US at a higher rate than in any other country. Europe is McDonald's second-largest market after the United States. In Australia, they offer a beverage known as Frozen Coke, which is quite popular among young people. McD's restaurants are known for serving hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken nuggets, french fries, breakfast dishes as well as soft beverages, milkshakes, and desserts. McDonald's started divesting itself of other franchises it had purchased throughout the 1990s. A majority share in Chipotle Mexican Grill was held by McDonald's until October 2006.
