Cisco Systems, Inc., founded by two computer scientists Sandra Lerner and Leonard Bosack from Stanford University, is headquartered in San Jose, CA. The scientist duo looking for an easier way to connect computer systems of different types started this company in December 1984. The company now employs 35,000 people in more than 115 countries. On February 16, 1990, Cisco Systems went public. It was listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the ticker symbol CSCO. Its market capitalization was $224 million at the time of listing. Cisco is a worldwide leader in networking for the Internet. They design, manufacture, and sell internet protocol-based networking products. They also offer services related to the communications and information technology industry. Cisco Systems offers its products and services across the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Japan, and China. Its product line-up includes various categories like Routers, Switches, Wireless, Optical Networking, Network Management Interfaces and Modules, Outdoor and Industrial Access Points, Access Points, Next-Generation Firewalls, VPN Security Clients, Advanced Malware Protection, Email, and Web Security. CISCO also provides collaboration products like unified communications, the Internet of Things, Cisco TelePresence, analytics software, and security products, such as network security, cloud, and email security. They offer service and support functions including, technical support and advanced services. Its clients include businesses of all sizes and range from public institutions, governments to service providers. Cisco has strategic alliances with other companies. They also sell their products directly to customers and through distributors, service providers, and systems integrators. The company has made several acquisitions over the years, the largest being StrataCom, Inc. for $4.67 billion in April 1996. In recent years, it acquired AI-driven business intelligence startup Accompany for $270 million in 2018; CloudCherry, a customer experience management company; and Voicea, an artificial intelligence company in 2019.
