Founded in 1986, IRFC (Indian Railway Finance Corporation) operates in the financial services sector in India. The company borrows funds from the market for Indian Railways through various financial instruments. The funds are primarily used by Indian Railways to finance large-scale railway projects.
During 1998, it was recognized as a Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) by the Reserve Bank of India. During 2016, it forayed into funding railway projects through institutional finance from LIC, and in 2019, it set up the Euro Medium Term Note (EMTN) Programme for $2 billion. IRFC marked its entry into the public market by launching an IPO in January 2021.
