Roku Inc, a publicly-traded organisation based in the United States of America, in the city of San Jose, California was founded by ReplayTV founder Anthony Wood in the year 2002. The company manufactures an assortment of players on digital media for streaming of video. It also operates in the advertising space and licenses its software and hardware to many companies. Anthony Wood was appointed as the VP of Netflix in 2007. In 2008, Roku, a new company was established in February 2008, with Netflix investing about $6 million, to design a player after Netflix decided not to build its own payer. In 2017, the advertising product which is a self-serving initiative to enable advertisers to serve ads to Roku’s customer base was launched by Roku. The advertisements can be audio-visual, interactive videos, audience enablement promotions or brand sponsorships. In 2019, Roku entered into a partnership with Nielsen, a company that specialises in the area of advertising effectiveness. In the same year, dataxu, a platform for video advertising was acquired for approximately $150 million in stocks and cash. In early January 2021, Roku bought the rights to Quibi’s content for lower than $100 million, all 75 programs of Quibi now streams on Roku’s free channels which are ad-supported platforms. It completed the purchase of “This Old House Ventures” from TZP growth partners in March 2021, about 1500 episodes of “Ask This Old House” and “This Old House” now stream on Roku’s platforms. Some of the legacy products of Roku include Photobridge HD1000, equipment that displays images on HD television and streams MPEG video; SoundBridge, a music player on network; Soundbridge Radio, a music player which is network-based with inbuilt subwoofer and speakers and BirthSign solid-state media player to drive HD displays in the retail environment.
