The National Stock Exchange of India Limited or NSE is the leading stock exchange in India. It operates and provides seamless trading facilities throughout the year. The normal trading session for equities and derivatives on NSE starts at 9:15 AM and ends at 3:30 PM, providing a trading session of 6 hours and 15 minutes. The NSE, however, remains closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Besides, there are also a number of NSE trading holidays that are declared or announced by the exchange in advance. NSE Pre Open Session (9:00 AM - 9:08 AM)

  • This early window allows order placement and modification for the upcoming trading day.
  • Use this time to strategize and adjust your positions before the market opens.

NSE Regular Trading Session (9:15 AM - 3:30 PM)

  • This is the primary session for active trading of equities on the NSE.
  • The bulk of order execution and price discovery happens during this period.

NSE Closing Session (3:40 PM - 4:00 PM)

  • This brief window allows order placement and modification for closing orders.

NSE Block Deal Session

Morning Window (8:45 AM - 9:00 AM)

  • This session caters to large block trades negotiated outside the regular market hours.
  • Retail investors typically won't participate in this window.

Afternoon Window (2:05 PM - 2:20 PM)

  • Similar to the morning window, this allows for large block trades after the regular session.

NSE Trading Holidays List 2024 for Commodity Derivatives

NSE also has a Commodity Derivatives segment that offers trading in Futures. The instruments available for traders are Bullion and Energy Futures. Futures of a total of 5 commodities are available to trade on NSE - Brent Crude Oil, Copper, Degummed Soy Oil, Gold, and Silver.

Just like Equities, trading in commodity derivatives also happens all days of the week, except Saturdays and Sundays and the holidays announced by the NSE.

Normal Market Hours for NSE Commodity Derivatives (9:00 AM - 11:30 PM)

NSE offers extended trading hours for commodity derivatives (Monday to Friday), providing greater flexibility for investors. This extended session (9:00 AM - 11:30 PM) allows you to trade commodity derivatives throughout a large part of the day, potentially aligning your trading strategies with global market movements.

Normal Market Hours for NSE Currency Derivatives (9:00 AM - 5:00 PM)

The NSE currency derivatives market offers dedicated trading hours for those interested in managing foreign exchange (forex) exposure or capitalizing on currency fluctuations. This window (9:00 AM - 5:00 PM) allows you to trade currency futures and options contracts throughout the business day. These timings align well with major global financial centers, facilitating participation in international forex movements.

Muhurat Trading

Muhurat Trading is a special trading session conducted by NSE on Diwali. It is taken as an auspicious trading hour to start a new investment journey or to buy equities for long-term investment. The NSE announces hours for Muhurat trading in advance. Muhurat trading will be done on 1 November 2024 (Diwali). The trading timings for Muhurat trading will be announced by NSE later.
