Duolingo is a language-learning website and smartphone application developed in the United States. Learning takes place via the use of trees that are adapted to their target language. Duolingo's platform will provide 103 distinct language courses in 40 languages by 2021. Duolingo was founded in 2009, by Luis von Ahn and his post-graduate student Severin Hacker. Von Ahn wanted to embark on an educational project. He saw first-hand how costly it was for members of his community to learn English. Duolingo has secured $3.3 million in a Series A first-round of fundraising, headed by Union Square Ventures and Ashton Kutcher's A-Grade Investments. It was voted the #1 free education app in the Google Play store, according to its website. The funding round was led by Google Capital.
